Lavna Update, Secure Telecoms, and Better Public Spaces

Lavna, the construction project of a new greenfield commercial sea port of the same name to be built on the western coast of the Kola Bay in the Murmansk Region, is nearing its implementation phase. According to the management of the port, initial construction works will commence in the near future. Both the port owners and the regional governor’s office believe that the project will successfully meet the timeline requirements set forth under the roadmap approved by the Transport Ministry of Russia.

A team of engineers from a Siberian-based private company and the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology launched a joint project to develop a secure satellite communication terminal to be used in the Russian Arctic. There is a specific need for such devices voiced by companies operating in the Russian High North: currently, they have to rely mostly on imported technology and equipment, which is regarded by corporate analysts as a weak spot -- something a new device will help to deal with.

The Arkhangelsk Region will benefit from an unscheduled subsidy from the federal budget amounting to about 175 million rubles, which is to cover the expenses relating to improving public spaces in the city of Arkhangelsk. In fact, such places, whose list has been previously approved by popular vote, were to be refurbished later on in 2022; however, the federal government in Moscow decided to speed up the project by granting additional money to the Arctic region.
