Research for Development

Russian universities are launching a series of major research programs aiming to create new technologies that will help sustainably develop the Russian Arctic, explore the World Ocean and advance the responsible use of natural riches.

As part of this effort funded under Priority 2030, a federal grant initiative for Russian universities, the North-Eastern Federal University has announced its three strategic research programs: Man in Extreme North, Environment-Friendly Technologies for High North, and Digital University Ecosystem. The university’s management believes that the trio will help it secure a leading position in the Arctic studies.

Another participant of the initiative, the Far Eastern Federal University, will focus on studying the World Ocean and developing solutions in biomedicine, physics and digitization as applied to the High North. The university also intends to capitalize on advancing technological entrepreneurship and innovation.

In turn, the North-European Open Consortium for Research and Education formed under the aegis of the Petrozavodsk State University (Karelia, Russian Arctic) positions itself as an emerging center for studies in Arctic tourism, healthcare in polar and subpolar areas, and developing aquaculture and agriculture-related technologies for the High North.
