Drilling, Shipbuilding, and Carbon-Free Nickel

Gazprom Neft, a major Russian-based oil corporation, kicked off drilling operations at its new site in northern Yamal, Russia. The company claims it to be the first in Russia to have been launched upon the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic. The deposit is expected to serve as a starting point for a new oil cluster in the Russian Arctic containing some 1.1 billion tonnes of crude oil.

Russian mining company Nornickel, one of the top palladium, nickel, copper and platinum producing companies in the world, announced the start of production of carbon-neutral nickel. The company stated that efforts are made to mitigate the carbon footprint of its production through upgrading the company’s energy generation facilities located in the Norilsk area and taking steps to cut CO2 emissions across the whole production chain.

The City of Archangelsk will host the VI International Forum Shipbuilding in the Arctic in early July this year. The forum will focus on exploring the prospects and possibilities of doing business with Russian Arctic-based shipbuilding industries, as well as the future of commercial navigation in the Arctic Ocean.
