Senior Arctic Officials Met in Moscow

On 29-30 June, the Senior Arctic Officials of the Arctic Council convened in Moscow for the first executive meeting during the Russian Chairmanship of this important circumpolar forum (2021-2023).

During the meeting, delegates discussed plans for the action items outlined in the Reykjavik Declaration, as well as initial steps aiming to implement priorities of the newly adopted Strategic Plan for 2021-2030. Both documents were approved by the eight Arctic nations in the course of the 12th Arctic Council Ministerial meeting in May 2021. In turn, the Senior Arctic Officials and Permanent Participant Heads of Delegation were briefed on the priority initiatives and side events to be considered during the Russian Chairmanship.

The Russian representatives also informed their colleagues on the key items of the Russian Chairmanship Program.

The meeting was presided by Ambassador Nikolay Korchunov, Chair of the Senior Arctic Officials. The next such meeting combined with a Plenary Session of the Arctic Council, which are to take place in the city of Salekhard (Russia), are scheduled for November this year.
